The problem is that the rotor and stator must have spaces called slots, in the iron for the conductors. The conductors and air in the slots have a lower reluctance than the reluctance of the iron. There are more slots than there are poles in the stator. The windings are distributed among the slots to form distributed poles. Their is a different numbers of slots used for the stator and rotor. Those two features prevent the rotor from becoming locked or "cogged" in the minimum reluctance position that would otherwise exist.

Even with proper selection of the number of stator and rotor slots, there can be reluctance variations at different rotor angles that cause torque fluctuations and inflections in the torque vs. speed curve. Skewing the rotor slots mitigates that effect.

Induction generators don't work very well unless they are being used to supply additional energy into an active power source.

The method involving connecting capacitors to the generator output is used in some do-it-yourself projects, but there are several disadvantages.

1. The generator may need to be started using a manual procedure each time it is used.

2. The required capacitor value varies with load.

3. The output voltage varies with load.

4. If the load varies widely during use the generator may cease generating.

5. The load may need to be connected a little at a time.

6. The maximum load is likely to be considerably less than the capability of the machine when used with an active power source.

A wound-rotor motor can be operated as an induction generator by shorting the slip-rings together and operated using the capacitor method or or by connecting the stator to an active power source.

A wound-rotor motor can also be used as a generator by connecting AC to the rotor. When used in this way, a wound-rotor motor is called a doubly-fed induction generator. Doubly-fed induction generators are commonly used as wind-turbine generators. In that case, both stator and rotor are connected to active sources of power.
