Does anyone know what screen connectors or ribbon connectors for a smartphone like the galaxy nexus connecting to it's pcb and if simliar with other phones the screen connector that is, i'm finding it difficult to find what is compatible and not or any infomation on the ribbon connector is their a industry standard for something like that for touchscreens used in smartphones connecting the pcb? is a chipset exclusive setup thanks 🙂
All but the cheapest phones and tablets are using capacitive sensors rather than resistive ones.
But I think a lot of the user experience is not with the touch screen itself, but rather with the graphics engine and the software stack driving it. For example, a first generation android phone like the G1 is probably a faster processor than the first generation iphone was, but flipping through an image gallery on the original iphone was much smoother because they put a lot more thought into engineering a system where that could be done efficiently.
If I had to choose a touchscreen for my project I rather prefer a capacitive one. Resistive touch screens may be cheaper but have some disadvantages comparing with capacitive ones:
They need calibration
Are less sensitive
Have shorter life cycle
One of the downsides of the capacitive touch screens used to be the complexity of the required software and hardware, but there are already capacitive touch screen display controllers that solve this issue.
Take a look at NHD-5.0-800480TF-ATXI#-CTP from Newhaven Display, it may be what you are looking for.
It includes a controller with I2C interface and it seems fairly simple to use.

FFC/FPC, like Oli says. There are common connectors, or ZIF "Zero Insertion Force" connector. In the latter you first insert the FFC, then click the top part in the bottom part to fix it. ZIF connectors may be handy, since otherwise the FFC may get crooked when inserting; in my experience the insertion force can be rather high. On one occasion we had our toolshop make a special tool for the insertion, when the connector was difficult to reach.
The FFCs are often custom made, as their number of connections, pitch, and length may be different for each other application. Some have reinforced ends ("stiffeners") to cope with the connector's insertion force.
