I have very basic knowledge of electronics.
I am looking for a circuit which can turn ON/OFF an LED from a single switch.
If the LED is OFF and the switch is pressed (even if not released) then the LED should turn ON.
If the LED is ON and the switch is pressed (even if not released) then the LED should turn OFF.
A switch can be a push to ON switch but turns OFF when released. It is not like a toggle switch.

Believe it or not, that black lump is epoxy covering an integrated circuit, probably a small microprocessor. These are often caseless chips, just the IC die glued to the PCB with fine wires between the pads on the chip and PCB.
Many microcontrollers can be put into a deep-sleep state where they draw just a few microamps, so little so as not to significantly affect battery life. They spend all of their time in deep sleep until someone presses the button, which is connected to an interrupt line to wake it up.
Here is a sketch for my solution. This is just an abstraction, and but you can use your imagination to see how more channels are chained toward the bottom. Be sure to put some base resistance in there!
Not 100% sure this will work, but it's a place to start.

This one is fairly simple: -
Each time you press the button, the output latches in the opposite sense to what it previously was. Lots of good ideas.
