If I cancel the Google+ account, will I lose the Google OpenID functionality

I wanted to close my Google+ account, but when I went to do so, one of the items in the “Read this before proceeding” section mentions:

You won't be able to use the "Sign in with Google" button to log in to third-party apps.

I assume they mean OpenID, but I’m not sure.

I once closed or disabled my Google+ and next time I wanted to log in to Stackexchange I got a weird message about missing Google+ and it wanted me to activate it again.

So if you close your Google+ you will probably not be allowed to use OpenID until you activate it again.

At least that's what happened to me. This was a while ago so Google might have changed something since then.

To make changing OpenID providers easy: set up some delegate on a domain you own. You then don't have to change all your accounts, but only need to change your own HTML.

On the Stack Overflow blog, Using Your Own URL as Your OpenID describes this, but does not include the 2.0 syntax. Like for myopenid.com, for both version 1 and 2:

Go to https://www.google.com/accounts/b/0/IssuedAuthSubTokens

To navigate to this page:

Sign in at http://google.com and click your name in the top navigation bar. Then go to Google Account Settings.
At the bottom, click Visit the previous version of the Google accounts screen.
In the Security section under the Personal Settings tab, click Authorizing Applications & Sites
It then displays a list of sites under the Connected Sites, Apps, and Services header which you can then Revoke Access to.
