How to connect a real external speaker through a classic Jack connecter to the Board of Education?

So that I can send it FREQOUT instructions?

(instead of using the piezo-electric component)

I've not used this board before. But, I assume you could wire the existing piezo sounder to a simple amplifier and onto your speaker. An LM386 would be ideal.

Convert your sound file to a WAV file:

mplayer -ao pcm music.mp3

Make an unsigned mono 8bit version at the desired sample rate:

sox audiodump.wav -c 1 -r 8000 -u -1 converted.wav

Convert the samples to a C header file (get wav2c):

wav2c converted.wav sounddata.h sounddata

(For your BASIC Stamp, you'll need to convert this array into some other format).

Then, in your application you need to read one sample from the array each time the sample rate duration expires and transmit it out of your PWM pin.

Electronic – Running small external speaker via 3.5mm connection

The 3.5mm output of the raspberry Pi is a line level output. It cannot drive a speaker directly. You will need an amplifier. Headphones/Earbuds vary, but are often 32 ohm, with a power rating of half or less watts. Most small speakers are 1/2/4/8 ohms, with a power rating of 1 or more watts. The line level output just can't drive them.

You can get a simple amplifier premade, or use a audio amplifier chip like the LM386 or TPA2080D1 and a few passive components and make your own.

Alternatively, you can buy a dollar store battery powered mp3/ipod speaker and gut it, powering it off one of the Raspberry's voltage output pins.
