Electronic – EAGLE – changing only one PAD’s radius and not affecting the library part

I have a PORTC and PORTD which use a same library part (IDC connector). But because some of the pins on PORTC and PORTD are not connected (NC) I would like to strengthen them by increasing the radius of some pads which are different between PORTC and PORTD.

How can I do this in EAGLE if I don't wan't to create a new library parts or modify existing ones?

The good practice is to modify the library which is easy and quick after you learn it.

If you don't want to do any modification on the library. Then, choose a via from the left side panel, and place it on top of the pad that you want to enlarge the foot print. After that click on "Ratsnest" button to reshape your groundplane. This method will increase number of drill hole by one which would not be a problem for a manufacturer. Just pay attention to chose a drill size that is already used for the board in order to not to increase number of tool change.

Yup, that's a issue with Eagle, at least as of version 5. It would be nice if you could tell the DRC check to ignore anything resulting from stuff wholly inside a package, but you can't. There has been talk of changing that, but I don't know where that is at with regard to version 6. It doesn't matter anyway since version 6 isn't ready for any real use yet for a while.

You probably need the change ("wrench") tool available from the GUI. But it might also worth considering using some Eagle commands for that purpose.

Assuming for example you want to change the thickness of your wires to 30 mil, first you have to select those tracks as usual, then you might issue the following commands:

change width 30 mil
(> 0 0)

The (> 0 0) part simulate the right-click required to apply changes.

If you need to change the thickness of all the wires, this might be scripted even further:

display none top
group all
change width 30 mil
(> 0 0)
display last
