Is there any formal name for audio codecs? My lecturer said today that audio codec is a jargon and I should not use these words in my diploma, unfortunately she did not tell me if there is a proper name. I was surprised because it is so widely used in datasheets.

Codec is the proper name. It is also jargon in that laypersons do not know what it properly means.
