Limit switches don't have to carry all the current, but they can drive a relay that can! I'd go for a normally open relay, with limit switches designed to close the relay when all is good -- this gives a better failure mode (motor off!) if things malfunction. It's probably not as ideal as a direct cut of current to the motor through your switch, but it should get the job done safely.
Think hard about all your failure modes as you go through this exercise!
What you call "three-way" switches I'd call "two-way" switches because they switch one of two ways - just a minor thing really. The middle switch in the 3-location scenario can be made from 2 x 2-way switches but they need to be "ganged" so they both operate together: -
To make n-location switching you repeat the middle dual-switch circuit from above - two wires in and two wires out. Repeat n times. It's an Exclusive or function.

No it isn't. A simple multiway system such as both ends of a corridor relies on normally closed and normally open switches operating in tandem at each end. I hope I'm wrong because it's more important to learn than be correct.
If of course you use an SPST to control a changeover relay contact then I'm presuming that would be cheating!
