I cannot install any Extensions on magento. I tried the solutions from other posts but none of them worked for me. I have magento on godaddy ver. 1.9.
I tried keys in several formats like:
http://connect20.magentocommerce.com/community/[name]
magento-community/[name]
http://connect20.magento-commerce.com/community/[name]
Godaddy , of course, is never helpful. Can anybody give me any suggestions to fix this problem?

Installing via SSH:
Obtain the Connect 2.0 key via Magento Connect:
Ensure that mage is executable from your Magento root:
chmod +x ./mage
Execute ./mage install and paste your extension key immediately after the word 'install' - remove the slash between 'community' and your extension package name. E.g.:
./mage install http://connect20.magentocommerce.com/community OnePica_AvaTax
^ Notice the lack of a slash between 'community' and 'OnePica_AvaTax'.
To script into a deployment - issue the ./mage install command from your build. This should sync all production servers to have record of the community module install which should make removing or upgrading the module in the future scriptable as well (without necessitating a commit to your version control system).
Do you have a backup before you upgrade?
If you do, I suggest that you roll back and attempt it again but this time try to do it step-by-step from 1.5 to 1.6 to 1.7 to 1.8 and finally to 1.9 instead of going directly from 1.5 to 1.9.
What I suggest is for you to create a staging store and attempt the upgrade from there.
You should also take multiple backups to make it easy to roll back if required.
After taking your backup, attempt the upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 and check if everything works fine. If it does, continue step-by-step until you are at 1.9. If something broke in between, find out if there's any code changes which may affect your theme or extensions which are not compatible and attempt to correct them first before you continue.

That first example should be correct and is a Connect 2.0 format key. That's the format you want for Community 1.9. It looks like your error comes from the 2nd example which isn't a hostname. If you copy the installer key directly from Connect as-is on the product page it should work. Alternatively you can use a tool like http://freegento.com/ddl-magento-extension.php to paste keys into and download an archive of the code so you can review the code and install manually. This is a safer route because you can have a look at the code before it goes on your store.
