I have tried in my local magento 2 and setup the Braintree Sandbox details.

Note: When we give specify the merchant id in the admin end, it shows bad request error in the frontend.
As far as I know, Magento 2 use Ajax to handle this task.
We should take a look at file:

So, we need to override this file or the errorProcessor.process() - vendor/magento/module-checkout/view/frontend/web/js/model/error-processor.js handler. We can alert the error message.

From your screenshot the error is pretty clear that the card was declined most likely to either one of the fields being incorrect or invalid amount I'd recommend you look at thier dev docs which you can find here
