Magento Hellowired Theme checkout process not working on CE 1.8 but it works fine in CE 1.7
I'm having an issue with checkout process as on step 3 Shipping Method .
And also "Your Checkout Process" on the right bar doesn't get message.

there is a 'test' text appearing in front of the JSON resposne. Check your code for something like echo 'test'.

Most probably the order is not submitted because you are missing the form key for your order form.
Previous to 1.8 the review js object was built like this:

I see that you are using an extension for the checkout called Excelence...something.
The review js object is built like
review = new ExcelenceReview('<?php echo $this->getUrl('checkout/onepage/saveOrder') ?>', '<?php echo $this->getUrl('checkout/onepage/success') ?>', $('checkout-agreements'));
or something similar. Look for this piece of code in your template files and replace

with

right before placing the order everything runs smoothly. 8arGYSpcd7M7kVGr is the form key for my current session. You should see an order in your backed from user test@test.com. That should serve as confirmation that what I'm saying is true.

First , this session variable is set at Mage_Checkout_Model_Type_Onepage on function saveOrder here thus session variable is set for first time before redirecting to paygate way.
For Paypal,if customer is cancel this payment at paypal site and comes to magento paypal cancel url then on cancelAction this session variable is destroyed.So,you do not get realorderid .beacuse using ->unsLastOrderId() destroy realorderid .

The checkout progress section has changed in 1.8.
You can check this in the release notes in the Performance Improvements section.
I'm almost sure that this is the reason it doesn't work.
