Magento 2 – How to Show Bar Navigation Menu in Blank Theme

I'm new to Magento and currently working on setting up a version 2.0 shop.

However, I don't see to be able to activate/make the navigation menu bar to show in the Blank theme.

Does anyone know how to do that?

Late to the party here, and I think you've probably already figured it out by now, but you need to have categories UNDER the "Default Category". Then they should show.

After a lot of searching I found out that my template missed the reference to top.menu. So I copied catalog.xml from app/design/frontend/default/default/layout to design/frontend/default/mytemplate/layout

When you first install Magento 2 the home page is displayed using the 1 column layout. you should make a custom layout or modify the 2 Column layout to move the catalog.topnav element to the sidebar.
