Magento Packages – Understanding http://packages.magento.com/

On various social medias I've seen the URL http://packages.magento.com/ bandied about. This appears to be a composer repository (using satis software to host the repository).

What's not clear is

Who runs the repository (i.e. eBay? A third party? A third party acting with eBay's blessing?)
How a user can (if at all) get a package listed in this repository
If this is for Magento 1 packages, Magento 2 packages, or both
If this is for Magento 1 packages, how the composer project should be setup to install the packages into Magento 1 (as Magento 1's module system isn't fully compatible with the defacto vendor/* standard)

Does anyone here have any information on the above?

What is packages.magento.com? This is a Satis repository of the Magento 2 packages. This might change around by final release, but it gets the packages out there for now without polluting packagist.org with our weekly alpha code drops. Note that the root package listing all the modules that make up community edition is currently on packagist.org at https://packagist.org/packages/magento/product-community-edition. We are still experimenting with where best to host everything.

I'm not speaking for Magento but it doesn't seem like a good idea in general to install updates on a production site. In addition, we recommend you use the pub folder as your root in production so as to prevent running the Setup Wizard.

Install module via composer is the best way to Magento 2. Becuase there are many advantages if we install module via composer.
If you want to upgrade module you just need to change the version in composer.json file and run composer update command at the rootMagentoento.
While in manual installation you need to first download module and replace old files and run setup:upgrade command to upgrade module.
All modules which are installed via composer are downloaded in vendor folder.
Magento uses default https://repo.magento.com/ URL to download module If you purchase module from Magento Marketplace.
If you purchase module from third-party website. You need to add a repository in composer.json to download and install a module.

For Example

    "0": {
        "type": "composer",
        "url": "https://repo.magento.com/" //Default Magento Repositry
    },
    "thirdparty-module": {
        "type": "composer",
        "url": "https://mymodule.thirdparty.com/" //Third Party Repositary

In my opinion composer is the best and proper way to install module in Magento 2.

Install Third Party Module Via composer:

Run this command to add new repository in conposer.json

composer config repositories.thirdparty-module git https://thirdparty-composer-url.com

Now run this command to add component and version of module in composer.json

composer require [component-name]:[version]

Forex.  composer require prince/helloword:1.0.0

Now run composer update to download module from repository.

composer update

Now run setup:upgrade to install and register module in config.php

php bin/magento setup:upgrade
