Magento – Language Switcher Not Changing Frontend Language

I have Magento 1.9.2.0 with the sample data and default Madison Island store with 3 view names; English, French and German. In frontend when I switch the language using the select field, nothing happens! The frontend is still in English?

Shouldn't this select field switch the frontend language automatically? is there anything else that I should install since this is Magento and they do everything differently/complexly.

In Cache Storage Management I disabled it to all.

I'm on Windows 8 machine using Chrome browser and store installed through** http://127.0.0.1/** localhost

I have downloaded the modules: Locale_Mage_community_fr_FR & Locale_Mage_community_de_DE and it seems to work, so please close the question 🙂

I finally fixed it after reading many tutorials about how Magento works. To save time and hair for future developpers, here's how to do it:

Go to magentocommerce.com and search the language pack, like this one for french language: click Install now and use Magento connect 2 and then get extension key.
Go to your admin: System -> Magento connect -> Magento connect Manager, Install New Extensions and put the key you got earlier, then follow the instructions there.
Return to admin, then go: System -> Manage Stores. create Store view for the new language. You may need to refresh cache.
Return to admin, then go: System -> Configuration. Choose your language in the Current Configuration Scope select box: Set local to your language in Local Options.
Now we have to assign the front end home page to the new language, go to: CMS -> Pages. Search for title "Madison Island" click on it and in Page information, set Store View to All store views.
Next step is to assign the products to that new language, go to: Catalog -> Manage Products. Select all and set action to Update attributes. In Websites -> Add Product To Websites, check Main Website.
You may be asked to re-index data: System -> Index Management.
Finally lets refresh and delete cache: System -> Cache Management and then logout/login.

This is how to do it :)

Magento 1.7 – Fix 404 on Store Switch with Product Store View Scoped URL Key

The problem is a bug in the model Mage_Core_Model_Url_Rewrite_Request (Magento 1.8) and Mage_Core_Model_Url_Rewrite (earlier versions).

The section of core code in 1.8 looks like this:

The Bug: the value of the query parameter is the store code, (in my case de, en or fr). The keys of the array returned by app->getStores() are the numeric store IDs. Thats why if (!empty($stores[$fromStore])) { always fails.

Once that bug is fixed, another bug becomes apparent later in the same method (I think only in 1.8):

$targetUrl = $this->_request->getBaseUrl() . '/' . $this->_rewrite->getRequestPath();

The request objects base url always is the Magento base_url, without the store code. Using $currentStore->getBaseUrl() instead there fixes that bug, too.

Once those two issues are fixed the language switcher works fine. Here is an extension which does exactly that for Magento 1.8 (CE): https://github.com/Vinai/VinaiKopp_StoreUrlRewrites

In Magento 1.7 the issue might be something different. I still thought I'd add this answer, just in case google brings somebody else here who is running 1.8 or newer.

Magento 2 – How to Set One Domain for Each Language

According to your requirements, you have to create two websites with :

one language for each website
one domaine for each website

To switch between the two languages, you have to add some storeswitcher or a dropdown input.

EDIT:

You have this ?___store=... in your urls because you are using just one website with different storeview ! this is why i told you to use two websites and you create and set just one store and one view for each website, you set en language for the first website and cz for the the second.

nb: the languages you set them in the store view Stores -> All stores -> Storeview code and in Locale Stores -> Configuration -> General

The store switcher appear JUST when you have 2 store views under the current website that you are viewing.

Since you have only one store view for each website this doesn't appear.
