Magento – Magento 1.7: I can’t stop reindex process

I'm trying to separate magento back end and front end in 2 nodes. I follow the HOW-TO on magento site. Now I have two installation of magento that work properly. My problem comes when magento start reindex process. It doesn't stop, it's in pending state since friday (5 days).
I try to stop it by removing all locks file in /var/locks folder and restarting apache, but nothing has changed. Now I can't restart it because magento throw me an exception because reindex is in progress and I can't install any extension.

How can I restore the state of reindex process?

Make sure that the var/locks folder you are clearing is under your Magento root dir and not simply your base linux var folder.

as stated correctly by Sander, deleted products still present in the product flat table cause this error. Anyway, truncating the whole table will not be necessary. You can find these products by this SQL-query:

SELECT pf1.entity_id
FROM catalog_product_flat_1 pf1
LEFT JOIN catalog_product_entity p ON pf1.entity_id = p.entity_id
WHERE ISNULL( p.entity_id )

You will then have to delete these items, which can be done using this SQL-query:

DELETE pf1.*
FROM catalog_product_flat_1 pf1
LEFT JOIN catalog_product_entity p ON pf1.entity_id = p.entity_id
WHERE ISNULL( p.entity_id )

Magento – Can’t reindex product flat data

Likely, you have missing or malformed foreign keys on your existing tables, and then the indexer creates a temporary table and tries to setup a foreign key relationship with the permeate tables, it errors.

My suggestion is to run the Magento Database Repair Tool, located here: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/doc/db-repair-tool

This involves creating a fresh installation of Magento with another database, using the same version of Magento that you're site currently uses, and then letting this tool compare the two databases for problems.

Make sure to delete this tool when you're done and test it on a non-production environment first.
