Using Magento 2.2, Backend, Customers. I cannot update or save suctomer telephone number, but after Save no message Error.
Customer -> All Customer -> Customers

I see phone number in customer information edit form, But still not show in table.

Customer Table -> Edit -> Address
PayPal allows to tconfigure this on your merchant account
Select one of the following options: On (Optional Field) – PayPal lets payers share their telephone numbers with you, as an option.
On (Required Field) – PayPal informs payers that their telephone numbers will be shared with you because you require it.
Off (Recommended) – PayPal does not share payers' telephone numbers with you.
PayPal does not recommends to turn this on as a required since it may decreases conversion so the compromise in this case is to have "On (Optional Field)" configured
There is a Magento2 feature that is by default telephone field is required. There is a lot of discussion on below topic:

There is also a suggestion on this topic that we can make it optional by running SQL script
update eav_attribute set is_required=0 where attribute_code='telephone';
Read full topic and then run the query.
Note: Take a backup of DB before making any change.
After run query check eav_attribute table and make sure attribute column value changed to is_required to 0.
Run reindex command for attributes only
php bin/magento indexer:reindex catalog_product_attribute
and delete all cache and static files, compile and regenerate code by below command
php bin/magento setup:di:compile
php bin/magento setup:static-content:deploy

Customer phone number from the billing address. Once we add billding address for the customer then only the grid phone field can be validated.
