Magento – Magento CMS Page vs Static Blocks

I am setting up a Magento store and it has a lot of CMS content.

I have been fiddling between:

Creating categories and actual CMS page with corresponding URL then rewrite the categories url to the CMS Page
Creating categories and and static blocks (with CMS content) and just link the categories to the right static block.

It seems to me the latter solution is less of a hassle and cleaner, but is there any con in doing this ?

Mostly if you want to create small blocks on given page then you should go for static block with category. In this case you have easy option to add products also as it is category page you can select product as well as static block.

If you are creating page like about us or contact us page where you have full pages content only then you should go for CMS page as it is easy to change the contents on a single place.

By alignment you mean your layout right?

This is what i do for all of my CMS pages in order to keep them in .phtml files and handle the presentation via CSS.

Add this snippet to your CMS Homepage's Layout: <reference name="content"> <block type="core/template" name="default_home_page" template="cms/home.phtml"></block> </reference>

then create a file on /app/design/frontend/yourpackage/yourtheme/cms/home.phtml and put your content there. Align them via CSS strictly. I know it's not easily editable but it's a clean solution for a developer.

I may be totally wrong, but you can call it like this

{{block type="cms/block" block_id="home_image-center"}}

in cms -> homepage-> content : in that click show/hideeditor past above code it's work
