I've just added a 2nd store to my Magento installation. Any new product that is uploaded to the backend only displays in the primary store and not in the 2nd one – While images for products that were created before the 2nd store was enabled display perfectly in both stores.
Magento is calling the placeholder image url in the 2nd store, which suggests that the images aren't being created. I have created symlinks between the two directories and the files are part of the www-data group.
The first problem I can't find a solution for is how to tell Apache to rewrite (?) the static assets
Actually, you don't need to do that. Instead of setting http://siteA.mydomain.com/de/ as Base URL, set it as Base Link URL, and keep the Base URL as http://siteA.mydomain.com/, configuring it in the website level. This will tell Magento to look for assets on your root path, so you don't even need to rewrite the static files, whilst the URLs for products and other links will be generated using /de/.
So you configuration for aa_de should look like this:
(Base URL is configured in the website level, while the Base Link URL is configured in the store level)
The Add to Cart buttons started to work when I performed these 2 tasks from command line:
php bin/magento indexer:reindex
php bin/magento cache:clean
For a reference, I set the Cookie Path to be / for all Stores as follows:
I did not change Cookie settings and am using default for Default Config and Main Website. The Cookie Path is set for Store View 1, Store View 2, and Store View 3.

Images and products need to be allocated to each store.
Products: Click edit and selected "Websites"... make sure all applicable websites are checked.
Images: Make sure that the images are selected (if the above wasn't done before, you'll see new options about where they'll be shown). Another thing is, if your new store setup is http://existingshopdomain.com/newstore or similar, you'll need to change the media url to point to the existing store's media folder (if it's a different domain pointing to the same directories it will be fine. e.g. http://newshopdomain.com).
