Magento – Magento System Configuration: meaning of Currency Options

The book "Magento Beginner's Guide – Second Edition", by Packt Publishing which is the latest book to be published on Magento as of October 2013, says the following about currency configuration, which is clearly a typo:

Referring to System -> Configuration -> GENERAL -> Currency Setup

The Default Display Currency field can only be set on the Website level. This is the currency that is used to display the price of your products. If you want to use multiple stores using different default currencies, this automatically means that you need to create more Magento Websites. A Store View won't work in such a case.

I am running Magento 1.8.0.0 whose screenshots aren't different here from those of the previous release. As the following screenshot shows the Base Currency must be set at the website level, not the default display currency:

In view of this misprint, could someone please explain to me the difference between "Base Currency", "Default Display Currency", and "Allowed Currencies"?

According to the Magento Knowledge Base:

In the Base Currency list, select the primary currency that is used for store transactions.
In the Default Display Currency list, select the primary currency that is used to display pricing in your store.
In the Allowed Currencies list, select all currencies that are accepted as payment by your store.

The error occurs with the definition of the admin router. It appears not only to be a windows error as I am also getting this on a linux machine. Currently it looks as follows:

    <routers>
        <adminhtml>

                    <currencysymbol>Mage_CurrencySymbol_Adminhtml</currencysymbol>
                </modules>
            </args>
        </adminhtml>
    </routers>
</admin>

But if you use the "before" tag and specify "Mage_Adminhtml" then it will work.

            <args>
                <modules>
                    <currencysymbol before="Mage_Adminhtml">Mage_CurrencySymbol_Adminhtml</currencysymbol>
                </modules>
            </args>
        </adminhtml>
    </routers>

You should also add the dependency to the /app/etc/modules/Mage_CurrencySymbol.xml

Currency Position Configuration in Magento

Which language do you have set up on your store? It should be that file. The symbol below represents your currency symbol, change it's location.

Then open your FTP tool or SSH and delete all contents in the var/cache/ folder. Then it should work. If you have English set up on your store, edit the en.xml file. (I tried this on a demo store I use, and doing this works)

[In your Magento root, navigate to] /lib/Zend/Locale/Data

Download your language file (us.xml) for example

Open the xml file in any text or xml editor

search for <currencyFormat>
In the following line there is [a <pattern> element], change it from:
<pattern>¤#,##0.00;(¤#,##0.00)</pattern>
to
<pattern>#,##0.00 ¤;(#,##0.00 ¤)</pattern>
[i.e. move the currency symbol]
Save the local file, and upload it again to server, overwriting the old one.
