Magento – Magento theme not get loaded

I have set up live code of one of my company's magento website at local side. I done all changes in core_config_data , then cleared cache and session folders still theme is not get loaded.

When I view source the page I found that css folder is missing from skin/base/default (may be done implicitly by developer) and when I copy css folder(containing styles.css, widget.css etc) theme get loaded but Magento default theme and not my custom theme.

Even I cannot make any changes at admin side as data not get saved on clicking on any button.

Please help in this issue.

I would not often suggest making changes via the database but in the case where you cannot access the admin section the package information is stored in the table core_config_data where the path = 'design/package/name'

I would suggest that you change your admin package and theme back to the default and see if that helps you to edit items from the admin section before you start to play around with the database.

Also make a backup before working directly with the database.

You seem to be talking about two different things. In Magento, there are

a) packages
b) themes

The package defines the first folder and the theme the underlying "child" folder. An example:

app/design/frontend/PACKAGE/THEME

Furthermore, you can specify a separate folder for your skin via the backend settings, but it will be in the same package that you configured.

So, say you put package = mycompany and theme = mytheme and skin = myskin,

then your paths will be:

app/design/frontend/mycompany/mytheme/template -> for phtml files
app/design/frontend/mycompany/mytheme/layout   -> for layout xml files, e.g. local.xml
skin/frontend/mycompany/myskin                 -> for skin files like css, js, images

Magento – Where to place Magento 2 Theme customizations

In Magento 2, there is a term called static content deployment. You see js/css files links coming from pub/static/ directory because Magento deploys js/css files to this directory from your theme/module directory and whenever a user visits website, static files and referred/shown from pub/static/ directory.

Initially you will be developing your frontend theme in app/design/frontend/ and you can deploy static content to pub/static/frontend/ using command php bin/magento setup:static-content:deploy. During development you should delete everything inside pub/static/, var/cache/, var/page_cache/, var/generation/ and deploy you content using above command.

Here is basic theme configuration example which goes inside app/design/frontend/MyStore/MyAbstract/

Put preview image preview.jpg (you can change name is theme.xml) inside media directory and you should see your theme in admin section store configuration.
