Magento 1.9 Search Results Issue – Too Many Results

I found a product using a specific search in my store at #5 in the middle of my product grid. I'm using "Combined" for search. All but "Name" attribute is searchable….why is it #5 and not #1 on the top row?

Our site has really funky search results. Ideas?

The native MySQL search engine indexes all attributes you have configured to be indexed for search. On top of that, it runs an OR operation on matching words. So, you'll get all kinds of results if you let attributes like description be indexed.

Open your file Mage_CatalogSearch_Model_Layer and in method

public function prepareProductCollection($collection)

before return $this;

Add following rows:

Mage::log($collection->getSelectSQL(1), false, 'search.log', true);
Mage::log((array)Mage::getConfig()->getNode()->global->models->catalogsearch, false, 'search.log', true)

(it's for debug purpose to understand your problem).

Then open your var/log/search.log and put result to your first post (there should be long sql query and array where we can see rewrites).

Magento – Product not found when searching by Title

This may not be the best answer but something that has worked for me in the past when a product isn't showing up in search:

Go to Manage Products and checkmark your product.
Next, "Update Attributes" from the dropdown above the grid.
On the Update Attributes page, click to the Websites tab and re-associate with the proper website by checking the checkbox under Add Products To Website.
Click save and rebuild the Search Index.
