Magento API Connection – Which URL is Used for API Connection in Magento

i am trying to connect magento api connection using soap client and am confusing about what url use for api connection.Is magento used Either used Secure Url Or Unsecure url.

My Web Url setting like this:

unsecured is http(http://www.examaple.com/)
and Secured url is HTTPS(https://www.examaple.com/)

Then tell what protocol is used for api connection?

Also i want to know which one is proper url for Soap APi Connection

Step1: add a ssl vhost on private ip for www.example.com 
step2: and reload apache
Step3: and also made a host file entry

Finally, i got it working by using 127.0.0.1 as hostname and used SOAP v2 Calls,

    $client = new SoapClient('http://127.0.0.1/magento/index.php/api/v2_soap/?wsdl');
    $username = 'XXXX';
    $apikey= 'YYYYY';

    $session = $client->login($username, $apikey);

    $result = $client->catalogCategoryInfo($session, '2');

    echo '<pre>' . print_r($result);
