Using Fabric on a Cisco device : “Line has invalid autocommand”

I wasn't sure where to ask this but it seems to be something on the switch side so I thought I would start here first.

I am working on a little project to automate updates to config files in bulk using Fabric. I have everything installed and seemingly working correctly in Python and have gotten to the point where I am ready to start building some tests. However, all of the commands that I feed through Fabric come back with the following error:

Line has invalid autocommand "/bin/bash -l -c "X""

Where X is the command I am trying to run on the switch. I am having trouble understanding why this is failing, maybe somebody can offer an explaination? Is this something that needs to be configured on the Cisco side? I am testing this on a 3750 switch running 12.2, not sure what other details to provide.

Fabric is designed with a certain execution model; It assumes something, Bash by default, will run on the remote to execute your command.

You can change what the remote command is though. You might try changing the remote command into a single space for when you're sending commands to something like a CLI (eg, Cisco IOS).

On a Layer 3 switch:

Log into the switch and issue the following command (where ipaddress is the ip address of the host you are trying to locate:
```
show ip arp *ipaddress*
```

The output should look similar to below, and give you the mac-address of the device (I've highlighted the mac-address below in bold).

Now issue one of the following commands (where mac-address is the hardware address from previous step). Depending on the Cisco platform, sometimes the command is listed in either form.

show mac address-table address *mac-address*
show mac-address-table address *mac-address*
```

The output should look similar to below, the port you are looking for should be listed as the Destination Port:

On a Layer 2 switch:

Find out what device is doing the routing for this switch (you may have to look at the network documentation). Sometimes it is a "Router on a Stick", where the Layer 2 VLANs are being trunked up to the router for the Layer 3 decisions.

Log into the routing device, and issue the following command (where ipaddress is the ip address of the host you are trying to locate:
```
show ip arp *ipaddress*
```

The output should look similar to below, and give you the mac-address of the device (listed below in bold).

Now log into the Layer 2 switch

Cisco – display ALL routes using a single command

show ip route vrf * displays the global routing table plus all the VRF instances.

sh ip route vrf * 0.0.0.0 displays the default route for each VRF.

This shows the default route for each VRF, including the default VRF. As this IOS 12.4 doesn't show the VRF name when displaying a matching route, a route tag was added on the static routes to help identify their VRF.

r1#show ip route vrf * 0.0.0.0

Routing entry for 0.0.0.0/0, supernet
  Known via "static", distance 1, metric 0, candidate default path
  Tag 100
  Routing Descriptor Blocks:
  * 192.0.2.2
      Route metric is 0, traffic share count is 1

  Routing Descriptor Blocks:
  * 192.0.2.2
      Route metric is 0, traffic share count is 1
      Route tag 200

Showing longer-prefixes on your matching route will show the VRF names. `sh ip route vrf * 192.0.2.0 longer-prefixes'.
