Apache Remote Logging

I am investigating the possibility of logging Apache access & error_logs into one central repository, as opposed to each server having their own log files.

Does anyone have any ideas or best practises on how to do this? Anyone can push me in the right direction?

You can use rsyslog, see http://wiki.rsyslog.com/index.php/Working_Apache_and_Rsyslog_configuration

To log everything to a remote server put in /etc/rsyslog.d/0X-remote-server.conf:

*.* @<IP-address remote server>

Then on the remote server you can use for instance syslog-ng with filters to put all logging in seperate directories (i.e. per VirtualHost).

If you log over the network it's wise to encrypt your data. You can use stunnel for this (http://www.stunnel.org/).

I found a solution that works for me. I added these lines to .htaccess:

# Don't log missing files
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(artifacts\.jar|content\.xml|content\.jar)$ - [R=404,L]

It uses mod_rewrite. R=404 says to send 404 Not Found status code when client accesses any of mentioned files.

RewriteCode is there to make sure that file indeed doesn't exist. If I ever put one of those files into the directory, it will be served as usual.

This works great: mentioned files are no longer logged into error.log (that was my goal), but are still logged in access log (with 404 status).

I may be mistaken here, but I believe you would need to have your script handle opening and writing to the log file you are expecting. Apache would not capture the stdout of your script and place it in the log file.

I don't run my own custom scripts with piped logs, but I do use rotatelogs and you do have to give it the path to the log file to write. Such as:

CustomLog "|/usr/sbin/rotatelogs /var/log/httpd/ssl_access_log 86400" common
