Can tone ethernet cable into patch panel but it’s not working

So we recently had to two major issues happen at a location.

We had a lightning strike hit the building
We updated switches after this lightning strike

Now one thing that was 'hit' was a SOHO router. After upgrading the server room, we realized that the port for this SOHO router no longer works. I toned the cable out fine but the replacement router (same make & model) isn't powering on. I've repunched the back of the port, I've tried different cables, etc still nothing. Short of rerunning this wire through the building is there anything else I can try? My thinking is that the lightning that hit the router also fried the ethernet cable.

You can use a Fluke to test the pairs. That will tell you if the cable is bad; all the tone does is confirm that the two ends have electrical connectivity.

Connect your replacement switches back-to-back with a fiber patch cable and verify for sure that their fiber ports work. If they do, then double check the patch cords you're using at each end in the same manner. If you really want to slog through it yourself and have the right patch cables you can use the switches as cheap testers to test at each of the splices (assuming you have connectors on the splices).

If the switches do work, get a better fiber contractor in there. It sounds like your contractor was dodgy. I agree w/ the other posters re: their meter. My experience with contractors testing fibers for me is that their meter knows far, far more than I do about a given fiber.

A whole 1000' spool of cable would cost little more than the patch cables.

You shouldn't use RJ-45 on one end and punched-down connections on the other end if that's what you're describing. You also shouldn't use plugs on through-the-wall cables.

Also, do yourself a favor and use service loops. The extra length will come in handy for changes, etc.
