Cannot ping from host to host on the same internal network vmware

I am simply trying to create two Windows 8.1 Desktop VMs and test network connectivity between the two without binding the network/vSwitch to a physical NIC. I created a standard vSwitch and set the adapters (E1000) on the VMs to the correct network. After setting each of their IP addresses they cannot ping each other. Am I missing a step? Are there further instructions anywhere out there that explains how to do this?

If the VMs are on the same port group, they should be able to talk to each other.

I'm going to assume if you do sudo iptables -L | grep policy it will look something like this:

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
Chain FORWARD (policy DROP)
Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)

If you simply do iptables --policy FORWARD ACCEPT. Your issue will be resolved. But having a server without setting iptables correctly can be dangerous. So you will probably want to refer to this wonderful guide to get yourself started using iptables.

VMware ESXi – Multiple Separate Concurrent Uplinks on vSwitch

So the physical server running ESXi and hosting the pfSense virtual machine has 12 physical UTP cables connected to it: one for the WAN link to your internet router and 11 for internal connections? Do these 11 internal-use UTP cables go directly to other servers or do they connect to a switch first? If only one is up and the other 10 are down, I would suspect that the spanning-tree protocol on your switch disables the 10 interfaces as it detects a loop? Why not create a port-channel (LACP) configuration on your switch and ESXi host?

If these cables directly connect the ESXi host to other servers, I would check port speed and duplex settings as well as the UTP cable type (straight vs. crossover).
