Centos – Change ownership of directory and all contents to a new user from root

I created a website under /var/www/html/ all under root, all images, files, .htacess, directories, etc… I uploaded and configured everything as root.

I want to make it it's own username/password so it's not owned by root. I currently do not have the user account made either, I want to also setup FTP for the user account.

There is also about 30GB of images in the folder as well.

How can I go about changing all of this?

I am running CentOS 5.5 64 bit.

adduser ftpuser

passwd ftpuser # set the password

chown -R ftpuser /var/www/html/

"yum install proftpd" should install the ftpd server.

I would STRONGLY suggest just using SCP/SFTP instead though - which is part of SSH. Pretty much every app and file transfer program (i.e. filezilla) already supports this anyhow. It will give you encryption - so if someone is sending files from their home, someone cannot snoop the passwords.

The easiest thing to do would be to change the owner/permission on the folders to just those specific users

chown -R user1 /path/to/user1/dir

chown -R user2 /path/to/user2/dir

Usually that comes from Selinux not giving access to the folder. do

ls -alZ /var/www/

and if the html folder doesn't have the context system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t, fix it with chcon

chcon -v -R --type=httpd_sys_content_t /var/www/html
