Centos – How to install CentOS 7.0 from shell after booting from Live CD

I downloaded the Gnome version of CentOS 7.0 and booted it in a VM using VirtualBox. The mouse didn't work right so when I tried to launch the "Install to Hard Disk" task, nothing happened.

I rebooted the VM and appended 3 to the kernel boot options to boot into the console instead of the GUI desktop. So now I'm at a root shell prompt, but what program can I launch to run the text installer so that I can install the OS on disk?

Use the DVD or Everything images or the netinstall image to install, instead of the Live CD that you are trying to use. You then have access to the regular installer. The Live CD does not include anaconda, the installation program, but only a custom installer that installs only that particular system image.

Most probably the initrd image is not valid, there must be a problem with the paths when the image makes the switchroot. A common cause is that all drivers are not loaded in the initrd and thus the hard drive is not detected. Can you provide:

a) the grub.conf output

b) the content of the /etc/modprobe.conf on your virtual disk ? The remedy I would suggest is to repeat your

#mount --bind /proc /mnt/disks/sda1/proc
#mount --bind /dev /mnt/disks/sda1/dev
#mount --bind /sys /mnt/disks/sda1/sys
#chroot /mnt/disks/sda1

operation and then run mkinitrd from chrooted environnement, but with a fixed alias scsi_hostadapter xxxx line in your modprobe.conf file.

What you want to do for consolehelper is put UGROUPS=wheel in the console.apps files. (You don't need to change what's there already, and usually shouldn't.) And then add the corresponding users to the wheel group. Then, members in that group will be prompted to auth-as-self, while other users will still auth-as-root. (A while ago, I needed this same functionality, so I wrote it and got the patch upstreamed. Open source is awesome.)

This is documented in man userhelper.

On newer distributions — current Fedora and RHEL6 — consolehelper is being phased out in favor of PolicyKit (a.k.a. polkit). This has a different configuration scheme, but can also do the same thing. See man pklocalauthority for details on that, but the summary is: put files in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d with contents like:

[Wheel-Group Permissions]
Identity=unix-group:wheel
Action=org.something.seedocs.*;more.actions.*;whatever.you.want.*
ResultAny=auth_self

And, finally, you can uncomment the %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL line in /etc/sudoers. (This may become the default in Fedora 15.)
