Centos – HP Proliant DL360 G3 – Can’t boot from CD

I have made several bootable disks: CentOS amd64, CentOS i386 and the HP SmartStart software. My second hand server refuses to boot to any of them, displaying the message: "non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready"

Make sure the drive is actually functional. I've had plenty of media drives on G3 ProLiants die after 5 years or so. Do you have a USB CD/DVD you can try with?

Other than that, enter the Rom-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) and make sure the "Boot Order" is set to hit the media drive before the Smart Array controller.

If you used whole hard disk for centOS, it might be possible to fix your grub.

From shell prompt, try this command below

#grub-install --recheck /dev/hda

After that exit to reboot.

If grub-install does not work for you, you can try to fix it manually from grub prompt. From grub prompt

grub> root (hd0,0)

Assumed that you've installed your boot on your first partition. Otherwise replace the last '0' with appropriate number. After that

grub> setup (hd0)

Then exit and reboot.

Update your firmware.

That's the first step you should take with a system of that vintage, as there have been bugfixes on the Smart Array controller that address issues like yours.

The quickest way to accomplish this is to use the bootable Firmware DVD available from HP. Download it, unzip and burn it to DVD or boot the system via its ILO interface.

Try your array creation after this.

If the firmware change does not help, you may want to try a different set of disks.
