Centos – When cron is completed How to get email notification and log in a file (both)

I am a Newbie to linux. I'm trying to figure out things. Can someone kindly help me how to combine these two commands?

(1) Normally cron can results can be directed to a log file by editing crontab in the below manner

*/10 * * * * /scripts/mysc.sh >> /home/ara/Desktop/test/log.txt 2>&1

(2) and in case we need cron results to be emails we can use MAILTO=someemail@domain.com such as

MAILTO=someemail@domain.com
*/10 * * * * /scripts/mysc.sh

But how to combine both options (1) and (2)? I have seen some webhosting space do have both options enabled simultaneously. I did my research/googling but failed to do it. I'm using centos 6.5 and use crontab -e to edit.

Your first example sends both stderr and stdout to the file (2>&1) ; the MAILTO variable set in the cron will capture any output that is not redirected, and this combined with directing the output to the file means that no output is available for the cron to email.

I'd suggest using tee to append the output to the file as well as sending it to stdout; this answer - https://serverfault.com/a/472878/102867 - is very similar one to what you're asking to acheive.

Alternatively, follow the suggestion in the first answer, and write a wrapper script to more gracefully handle the output of the script, and you can then both log, and have the output of your script mailed

By default, cron will email the owner of the account under which the crontab is running.

The system-wide crontab is in /etc/crontab runs under the user `root'

Because root is used widely, I'd recommend adding a root alias to your /etc/aliases file anyways. (run 'newaliases' after)

The normal way to structure this is for root to be aliased to another user on the system, e.g. for me I'd alias 'root' to 'phil' (my user account) and alias 'phil' to my external email address.

If you have a specific user cron that you'd like emailed to you on output, you can use /etc/aliases again (providing you have superuser access) to redirect the user to another email address, or you can use the following at the top of your crontab:

MAILTO="email@domain.com"

If mail should be sent to a local user, you may put just the username instead:

MAILTO=someuser

If you need more information see crontab(5) by running:

man 5 crontab

Get notification from supervisord when a job exits

There is a plugin called superlance.

You install it with pip install superlance or download it at: http://pypi.python.org/pypi/superlance

The next thing you do is you go into your supervisord.conf and add the following lines:

[eventlistener:crashmail]
command=/usr/local/bin/crashmail -a -m email1@example.com
events=PROCESS_STATE

This should be followed by a "supervisorctl update". When a process "exits" you will now get a notification sent to email1@example.com.

If you only want to listen to some selected apps you can exchange the -a for a -p program1 or if it is a group group1:program2 One example would be

[eventlistener:crashmail]
command=/usr/local/bin/crashmail -p program1 -p group1:program2  -m email1@example.com
events=PROCESS_STATE

Regarding the automatic restart: you should make sure that autorestart is set to true (it is set to unexpected by default). This way the package will be restarted 3 times. If after that it still exits, it gives up, but you can change that with startretries.

Example program:

[program:cat]
command=/bin/cat
autorestart=true
startretries=10
