Cisco – connect to the console of a Cisco 2960 switch via ethernet cable

I believe I need a serial to USB converter but would like to know if it is possible to connect to the console with just a regular Cat5e ethernet cable as my laptop doesn't have a serial port and I don't have an adapter handy.

No, the ethernet port on your laptop doesn't speak the same language as the RJ-45 serial console port despite having the same connector; you'll need the serial adapter.

I haven't seen one. It would have limited usefulness as Juniper, Cisco, Linksys, APC, HP Procurves, our Raritan power strips, etc all use different cables -- and some use different baud rates.

We've got a box of cables in our cage labelled with the baudrate/connection protocol and devices that it works with.

It is technically possible. I don't see it as being a big seller though.

This is the pin out of the connector on the switch.

Pin 1 : NC                                  Pin 6 : NC
Pin 2 : RxD                                 Pin 7 : NC
Pin 3 : TxD                                 Pin 8 : NC
Pin 4 : NC                                  Pin 9 : NC
Pin 5 : GND

A null modem cable should work.
