Console Hangs when Attempting to Deploy Software Updates

When in the SCCM 2012 console under Software Updates, I click Deploy on a Software Update Group and the console hangs indefinitely. It just stops; I click away and back and Windows does not recognize that the console has stopped responding. I end up having to kill the console through Task Manager. I have left the console for hours and it never becomes responsive again.

I have tried removing and reinstalling the SUP, without success. Server reboots do not help, either. The issue with the console occurs both on my desktop, and directly on the site server itself.

Any ideas? I've checked server logs and found nothing that would be indicative of a problem.

Update:
I managed to find something from the SMSAdminUI.log file. CA100065 is a deployment package that I created prior to attempting to deploy the software update group. This happens regardless of which package I point it at.

This could be just poor console performance, it does happen especially in larger environments where the console is fairly slow.

I posted an article on my blog some time ago about improving console performance, can I suggest you look into it and give it a go? You might be surprised at the difference it makes. As a bit of background, we are setting the MAXDOP setting within SQL, this is due to how queries against the database are issued in Configuration Manager.

Deploying Updates via SCCM only when users are logged off

After digging through SCCM's SDK Documentation, what I ended up doing was making the updates available but not mandatory. This populates a WMI class called CCM_SoftwareUpdate in the root/ccm/clientsdk namespace, see here. A simple query such as

"SELECT * FROM CCM_SOFTWAREUPDATE WHERE COMPLIANCESTATE=0 AND EVALUATIONSTATE < 2"

will get you the updates that are available that haven't been installed yet. When updates have been installed, eventually they will be removed from this namespace, but it takes some time. If you have to stop and restart installing updates for some reason, it helps to filter out the updates that are partially installed. The msdn page has more info on the different compliance states and eval states. That array of updates is then passed to the InstallUpdates method of the CCM_SoftwareUpdatesManager class in the same namespace, and you can monitor the progress of the updates individually (which is why I chose to pass my updates to that method one by one instead of all at once. Passing them in all at once doesn't really do much beyond queuing them and installing them one by one anyway, from what I've seen).

I whipped up a quick and dirty gui in C# (You can view it here), which I set as a logoff script in group policy, so when it runs the users cannot ctl alt del out of it, or press buttons to close the window either. It's as close to the real thing as I could get (we have control over the login background so I made my app's background look the same for consistency).

The sad part is we probably won't adopt that solution b/c of the multitude of laptops in our environment. No one wants to shut down their laptop and take it home for the day only to have to wait an indeterminate amount of time installing updates, which will at that time seem like forever.

Yes. You can do this with powershell similar to what the script you posted tries to do. I came across that script a while back, can't remember if it worked or not but I did get something to work. don't know why his wouldn't work, it does use the same methods, but I was able to do this with .NET and WMI using C#, so I know it can be done with powershell.

In a nutshell, I used the WMI query "SELECT * FROM CCM_SOFTWAREUPDATE WHERE COMPLIANCESTATE=0 AND EVALUATIONSTATE < 2" and passed each update one by one to the InstallUpdates method, because I wanted to display the progress similar to how Microsoft does it. You must pass an array to the InstallUpdates method, even if you're only passing a single update object. You could pass the entire returned array if you want, and it will queue them up like it always does, installing them one by one.

Also, what about configuring a maintenance window for this collection, and telling sccm not to install updates outside the maintenance window? When one update is finished, if it's past the maintenance window then it will stop installing updates (in theory for me, I've never had the maintenance window luxury).
