Debian – get GPG error when running apt-update for lenny-backports

Alright, so I'm trying to upgrade (if you could call it so) to lenny-backports as seen here, but I ran into this error when running apt-get update:

W: GPG error: http://backports.debian.org lenny-backports Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY A*numbers and letters*A
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

The line I added to sources.list is as follows:

deb      http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports lenny-backports main

And as Womble asked in previous question here is the version of debian-archive-keyring no matter what is that..

Your version of the debian-archive-keyring package is out of date. You need to upgrade it to the latest version available in lenny -- an apt-get install debian-archive-keyring should do the trick.

Try doing this and running apt-get again:

apt-key update

apt-key is a program that is used to manage a keyring of gpg keys for secure apt. The keyring is kept in the file /etc/apt/trusted.gpg (not to be confused with the related but not very interesting /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg). apt-key can be used to show the keys in the keyring, and to add or remove a key.

gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 9AA38DCD55BE302B
apt-key add /root/.gnupg/pubring.gpg
apt-get update

apt-get Update 404 Error on Debian Lenny – How to Fix

From a little poking around, it appears to be a problem with the Debian mirrors. According to the mirror info, lenny should be available, although you might need to change each instance of 'lenny' with 'oldstable' in /etc/apt/sources.list. However, pulling up 3 mirrors have all shown that 'lenny' and 'oldstable' are no longer listed.

Update: I did a little more poking around, and found that the USC Mirror looks to still have 'lenny' listed. Comment out your existing entries in sources.list and duplicate them the:

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/

Replaced with:

deb ftp://mirrors.usc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/debian/

See if that does the trick.

With a little luck this is a temporary issue, and will resolve itself in a few days.

Update 2: It looks like this is not temporary, and http://archive.debian.org is the best place to pull packages for Lenny. Also, it looks like security support for Lenny was ended on Feb. 12th 2012, although they did release 5.0.10, a point update, on March 10th, 2012.

It would probably be worth planning out an upgrade, especially for any Internet/public facing servers.
