Dell PowerConnect Console connection via Ethernet

When you buy a Dell PowerConnect (In my case it's a 5548) you are given a console cable that is serial to ethernet. Let's say you don't have a serial port on your laptop and but you still want to run the setup wizard via the terminal. Is there settings to connect to the console port using an ethernet cable to run that wizard? I've tried to look at Dell's documentation but all I could find was an option to connect using the provided serial cable. Thanks!

Best Answer

Do yourself a favor and purchase a USB to serial adapter. You never know when you may need it in addition to connecting to your Dell switch.

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: It's an RS-232 serial interface, not an Ethernet interface.

Side note: I've just checked a Cisco serial cable and confirmed that it's an 8P8C connector; but RJ45 is a different beast entirely.

This is the pin out of the connector on the switch.

Pin 1 : NC                                  Pin 6 : NC
Pin 2 : RxD                                 Pin 7 : NC
Pin 3 : TxD                                 Pin 8 : NC
Pin 4 : NC                                  Pin 9 : NC
Pin 5 : GND

A null modem cable should work.
