Disable any “pop3-login” on Dovecot

Using Ubuntu Server I have a test-server that sends out mails in PHP scripts. Other than that, it does not do anything with mail. However, I have a bunch of "pop3-login" processes going on. It appears to be somebody/something is trying to login to the pop3 mailboxes. But no POP3 mailboxes are (or should be) working. Is there an easy way to turn off pop3 (or imap) logins for Dovecot? I only need outgoing mails in PHP…

If you don't use imap or pop3, then remove dovecot:

sudo aptitude remove dovecot dovecot-pop3d dovecot-imapd

Dovecot has nothing to do with your outgoing mail, you're probably using postfix, exim, or some other MTA for that.

If you want to use IMAP but not POP3, then just remove the dovecot-pop3d backage. If you want POP3 but not IMAP, just remove dovecot-imapd.

Did you configure mail to access your mail using POP3/IMAP? If not, it will directly access your mbox.

Have a look at your maildir dovecot is using: mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir and also the directory ~/mbox (default mbox directory).

Try to monitor /var/log/mail.log, without further information from there we won't be able to fix that problem.

SOLVED --

In my case, earlier I had created my own ssl certificate and attempted to have dovecot use the cert. when dovecot would not work properly for me, I returned to the ssl pem's that are installed by default with dovecot. But I neglected to comment out two lines:

ssl_cert_username_field = example.com
ssl_key_password = secretsecret

both in conf.d/10-ssl.conf.

These are associated with the ssl certificate that I created. They had nothing to do with the default pem's from dovecot.

Once I commented out these two lines, all started working properly.

I'll have to uncomment them once I decide to use a different, non-dovecot pem.
