How would I enable my Litespeed server to process .fcgi files using a FastCGI module? I tried setting the handler to fcgid-script already but that doesn't work.

Syntax:

AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi
Options +ExecCGI

Just to avoid confusion, I am not trying to run PHP or Ruby scripts through FastCGI. I want to run raw assembly that is compiled to work with FastCGI. (I can confirm the code works, have tested on Apache already)

I know this is old, but perhaps it will help someone. The best way to do this is going to be to set up a script handler and external application in LSWS's settings. Check out this page for reference.

Essentially:

Go into the WebAdmin console > External App > Add
Select FastCGI Application
Name the application and set other settings, the most important being where the backend FCGI script processor is located
Save it
Create a script handler (WebAdmin console > Script Handler > Add)
In the script handler, set .fcgi files to go to the FastCGI external application you just created.

Running PHP via FastCGI will certainly give you the most flexibility. Not only can you safely use an mpm-worker Apache, you can even use another webserver altogether (e.g. nginx).

But even when staying with Apache, "PHP via FastCGI" is at the moment not one option, but at least two: mod_fastcgi, mod_fcgid. On top of that, you can either use dynamic, static, or external FastCGI processes; with or without suexec. And then there's PHP's internal FastCGI process manager, which is now replaced by the very nice PHP-FPM in PHP 5.3. All those options have different pros and cons and can lead to different problems.

Given the choice, I would pick mod_fastcgi with PHP-FPM at the moment, mostly because it allows for extremely versatile and stable setups.

Your configuration is telling Apache to serve all CGI scripts under FastCGI, which isn't possible. FastCGI isn't directly compatible with CGI scripts.

You should move the AddHandler directive into your client's VirtualHost, so it doesn't apply to the whole configuration, e.g.

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName clienthost.com
    ...
    AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi .cgi
</VirtualHost>

If your client's scripts are on the same VirtualHost as your other cgi scripts, you can restrict the FastCGI handling to a specific Location or Directory, e.g.

<Location /clientarea>
    AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi .cgi
</Location>
