Enabling quota and doing quotacheck on reboot

I have setup quota for home directories on ubuntu 10.04 server. I followed these tutorials: 5 Steps to Setup User and Group Disk Quota and Disk Quota This code I used at fstab file:

/dev/sda1 /home ext4
defaults,usrjquota=aquota.user,grpjquota=aquota.grp,jqfmt=vfsv0
1 1

I have doubts about whether following steps are necessary:
Adding quotaon -a >/dev/null 2>&1 to /etc/rc.local and adding quotacheck -avug to /etc/cron.daily/quotacheck

Ubuntu takes care of installing the startup script and periodic quota warnings. Look at the filelist of the quota package, /etc/init.d/quota turns quotas on:

on=/sbin/quotaon
# snip
ALLFLAGS=-aug
# snip
$on $ALLFLAGS

The cron file at /etc/cron.daily/quota runs /usr/sbin/warnquota. Note that quota's are working realtime, warnquota mails the user if they've exceeded their soft limit.

Block is normally of size 1 kilobytes nowadays, but it might be also 512 bytes - check this yourself.

6094452 is how many blocks of disk space you currently use,
the first 2147483648 is the maximum you are expected to normally use (again in blocks, note it translates to 2 TB, not to 10 GB); you can grow beyond, but only temporarily;
the second 2147483648 is how much you are allowed to use,
the empty place that comes next is the "grace period"; it is used only when you exceed "quota", i.e. when you are between "quota" and "limit",
365672 is how many files you currently have (inodes, to be more exact),
the remaining columns have the same meaning, but in regard to the "files" field; but they are 0, which means you have no quota on number of files

Linux – Setting Quota Per Directory

If you're forced to use ext3, then using LVM is probably your best solution. Create a new filesystem per project. That would look something like this:

# Create a 10g filesystem for "project1" in volume group "vg0"
lvcreate -L 10g -n project1 vg0

# Create an ext3 filesystem.
mke2fs -j /dev/vg0/project1

# Mount it (obviously you would want this in /etc/fstab)
mount /dev/vg0/project1 /projects/project1

Growing the project filesystems is easy:

# Add 2GB to the volume.
lvextend -L +2g /dev/vg0/project1

# Grow the filesystem.
resize2fs /dev/vg0/project1
