FTP Error 530, User cannot log in, home directory inaccessible

I've been tasked with setting up an FTP directory for a client of ours. I'm working from a Windows 2008 Server with IIS 7 installed.

To create the FTP user directory I've followed this eHow tutorial.

The FTP site is already set up on IIS 7, so I skipped that bit and followed the rest exactly. However, when I try to connect via FileZilla, I get the following errors:

Status: Connecting to xxx.xx.xx.xx:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220 Microsoft FTP Service
Command: USER userFTP
Response: 331 Password required for userFTP.
Command: PASS ********
Response: 530 User cannot log in, home directory inaccessible.
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

I've double checked the permissions of the user and everything appears to be as it should. If anyone has any advice, I'd be so grateful.

It's not clear to me from reading your post and the link you provided as to whether or not you're using user isolation. My suggestion would be to determine whether or not you want to use user isolation or not and then start from scratch.

The chances are good that your firewall supports FTP by watching the control connection (basically what you pasted above) and opening ports dynamically to enable the data connection to be made (where it said: "150 Opening BINARY mode data connection.").

You've encrypted the control connection. The firewall can't see inside to do that.

What you'll want to do is edit the firewall to permit a range of ports (how many depends on the number of clients you'll have) to enter (or leave, if you're permitting "active" PORT commands instead of or in addition to PASV). You will then need to configure the FTP server to only use those ports.

It is hard / annoying, but I've seen it work with at least one secure FTP server

Agree with Luke404. Check that your vsftpd.conf has the following entries configured and your firewall allows the pasv_min & pasv_max port ranges (10000 - 100010 is just an example). Remember to restart the service if changes are made to the conf file.


    pasv_enable=YES
    pasv_min_port=10000
    pasv_max_port=10010
    pasv_address=[Public IP address of your server]
