How to backup and remove solaris zones

Anyone know the commands to backup solaris zones?

If inside the solaris zone, i have also mounted to a separate directory in another network drive. How to make sure when during backup, the mounted files will also be copied over?

And also how to remove the solaris zones properly?

It depends on what kind of filesystem your zonepath is, if you are using zfs it could be just a matter of taking a snapshot and using zfs send to a file. Otherwise some methods are listed here http://www.solarisinternals.com/wiki/index.php/Zones_Best_Practices#Zone_Backups

I'd advise to backup any network drive (nfs share?) with a separate process ,using maybe a tar or cpio.

You can do it with scp if you first setup ssh keys (instructions here) so you don't need password authentication. The other thing you could do is install rsync, it's available in both sunfreeware and blastwave, or could be compiled from source for your system. In any case though if you do use rsync, I'd probably advise on using the ssh transport.

None of these will deal with permissions though. If the user the commands are running as don't have permission to read/write to the relevant directory, this will still fail.

How to restore solaris zone

Here is one way I've done it. Depends on whether you backed up the zone with the pax command

# mkdir -m 700 -p /zpool/zones/10gr2
# cd /zpool/zones/10gr2/
# ls ../..
oracle10gr2.pax  zones
# pax -r@f ../../oracle10gr2.pax
# zonecfg -z oracle10gr2
oracle10gr2: No such zone configured
Use 'create' to begin configuring a new zone.
zonecfg:oracle10gr2> create -a /zpool/zones/10gr2
zonecfg:oracle10gr2> exit

Attach the new zone to the new host

# zoneadm -z oracle10gr2 attach
These packages installed on this system were not installed on the source system:
        SUNWpostgr-82-client (11.10.0,REV=2007.04.27.13.04)
        SUNWpostgr-82-contrib (11.10.0,REV=2007.04.27.13.04)

Installation of these packages generated warnings: SUNWpostgr-82-server-data-root
Updating editable files
The file </var/sadm/system/logs/update_log> within the zone contains a log of the zone update.
# zoneadm -z oracle10gr2 boot
# zlogin -C oracle10gr2
