I have a linux server that supports only ipv4 and an IPv6 client. How should I use tunneling or NAT to get the connectivity done from ipv6 client to the ipv4 server? Client is a softphone that sends register requests to server and server has ipv4 address

You can't do that, it are two different protocols. You can tunnel through IPv4 and IPv6, but you can not get an IPv4 address to talk to an IPv6 address. Beginning and end point need to be the same protocol.

You have two options, either use IPv6 on your linux machine (you can use SIXXS) or provide IPv4 connectivity on your phone.

The thing to keep in mind with IPv6 and IPv4 is that they are two completely separate name-spaces, as well as protocols. The IPv6 client will have to somehow resolve that IPv4 resource as an IPv6 address. That's tricky.

However, you may be able to leverage a certain IPv6 transition technology known as NAT64. This does the v6 <-> v4 translation, though name-resolution still remains an issue. There isn't a lot in the Linux space that does this yet, though there are a few projects (one such).

This is controlled by the net.ipv6.bindv6only sysctl. Add the following to /etc/sysctl.conf and run sudo sysctl -p to effect the change.

net.ipv6.bindv6only=1

Applications can also explicitly only bind to the IPv6 address instead of changing this globally, for example, nginx has the ipv6only option to the listen directive. This corresponds to the IPV6_V6ONLY option to setsockopt().
