Trac – How to Debug Trac Effectively

I have installed Trac and it reports the following error when I'm trying to access its page:

Internal Server Error

TracError: IOError: (13, 'Permission denied')

Any suggestions what needs to be checked?

Enable debug in trac.ini. Restart apache (usually is ran behind apache) and check for errors in trac.log
Also verify error.log from apache.

I guess you have to change the owner to apache's user for all files and dirs of your trac instance.

It seems the problem is related to version mismatches between Trac and Python in Ubuntu 9.04. The Trac package is 0.11.1 while the Python version mod_python uses is 2.6. This combination does not work: Trac Users post, Launchpad bug, Trac ticket.

Replacing the Ubuntu package repository's version of Trac with a custom install of Trac 0.11.4 as suggested by the Trac Users post makes the problem disappear, fortunately this is as easy as

sudo apt-get remove trac
sudo easy_install http://svn.edgewall.org/repos/trac/tags/trac-0.11.4
sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

If you need to test your "Apache+LDAP+Trac" binding, you don't need to run standalone bin/tracd.

First try to use Apache LDAP authentification with Trac without LdapPlugin(it just adds ability to manage trac permissions for LDAP groups). You should configure authentifacation on /trac/login location, and Trac will automatically get authentificated user name. Look here: TracModWSGI - ConfiguringAuthentication This works fine in my setup(Debian Squeeze, Trac 0.12). So just remove all your modifications from from trac.ini.

When you will get working authentification, you may start configuring LdapPlugin.

WSGI is IMHO best way to run python application on Apache, it's fast and simple.
