How to delete files on NetApp ONTAP 7 by using CLI

As a volume containing a LUN filled up to 100% on a NetApp FAS running ONTAP 7.x, the LUN went offline automatically, stopping the VMs.

Now we need to delete snapshots or files on the volume to bring in online again. But I can't figure out how to do that. I found the possibility to delete old snapshots and this is what I have done so far. That was enough to get some free space and bring the LUN back online again.

But is it possible to delete files as well and if so, how to do that?

Deleting files inside the server that uses the LUN will not necessarily free up space. VMWare leaves data from its deleted files all over the disk, dereferencing deleted files without actually removing or overwriting their data. If you're using a supported combination of VMWare and Netapp, you can use a special VAAI command to unreference scsi sectors that are no longer part of the file system.

Aside from that, LUNs can not be shrunk, so your choices are to use VM level tools to copy the data to a new VM on a new LUN and delete the old one after the copy, or to grow the volume.

The best benefits of this upgrade is that :

Aggregates are bigger on the 2020 (now 16TB)
Parity disks are no longer counted in the total data size of an aggregate!
DeDupe limits have doubled for both the 2020 and 2050

Only issue we had was that the firmware updates on the shelves took longer than they should have.

changing your IP would be something like this (you would want to do this when logged in from the console in case it's not obvious):

# Get the name of the interface your current IP is assigned to, as well as 
# netmask, etc
ifconfig -a

# down the interface (i'm not actually sure if this is needed)
ifconfig INTERFACE down

# bring the interface back up with the new network info (substituting the
# correct values for INTERFACE, NETMASK, and ADDRESS)
ifconfig INTERFACE ADDRESS netmask NETMASK ip

You might also have to edit some files in the filer's etc/ dir to make the change persist across a reboot, as I said it's been a long time. cd to the filer's etc and grep for the current IP to get an idea.

as for renaming the share... Looks like you can't do a straight rename, you're in for deleting the old one and recreating it with the new name. How about something like this:

# show the info about the current shares:
cifs shares

# change the share name
cifs shares -delete OLDSHARE

# add the new name with the same settings as the old
cifs shares -add NEWNAME [options]
