How to install apache on AWS ubuntu instance

I've tried a few standard Ubuntu instances on Amazon's Web Services (AWS), but I can never find the apache package using apt-get.

Have you looked for apache2?

In general, to find a package if you don't know its exact name, use apt-cache search:

apt-cache search apache

So for you, I'm fairly certain what you want is:

apt-get install apache2

The AWS CLI now supports the --query parameter which takes a JMESPath expressions.

This means you can sum the size values given by list-objects using sum(Contents[].Size) and count like length(Contents[]).

This can be be run using the official AWS CLI as below and was introduced in Feb 2014

 aws s3api list-objects --bucket BUCKETNAME --output json --query "[sum(Contents[].Size), length(Contents[])]"

ps aux | egrep '(apache|httpd)' typically will show what apache is running as.

Usually you do not need to change the default user, "nobody" or "apache" are typically fine users. As long as its not "root" ;)
