How to mount ISO to VMWare guest OS

I'm new to VMWare (more familiar with VirtualBox).

I'm looking to add an ISO to a new Guest OS (Windows Server 2008). I would like to add the ISO as a CD-ROM drive so that the server 2008 instance will boot with the installation media and install the OS.

Of course, I am operating under the assumption that Guest OS installations operate in a similar way to VirtualBox, and could be dead wrong about that.

Anyone been through this before? I'd appreciate the help.

We're using VMWare Server 2.0.1 with VMWare Infrastructure Web Access 2.0.0.

If you edit the virtual machine, then select the cd-rom device, you can set the option to "Use ISO" and select your ISO file from there. If you also set the drive to connect at boot, it should automatically boot to the iso on the next restart.

I had issues setting this up with Ubuntu Server 8.04 as well. The answer lay in this Ubuntu Launchpad entry. It turns out VMWare are using a very old method of scanning for USB devices. In Ubuntu this can be reenabled by editing /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh and uncommenting the following:

After rebooting the VMWare web console successfully detected the USB devices. What you should see when logged into the VMWare Server web console is a small USB icon in the top menu on the far right. It is then a case of selecting your Windows VM, going up to the dropdown and selecting the USB device you want to attach to that VM.

Make sure you have added the USB controller virtual hardware device to the Windows VM.
I have not tested this with Intrepid, but it works fine with the latest release of Hardy (8.04LTS).

Running VMWare on XP 64 bit does not allow a 64 bit guest OS

You require Intel-VT or AMD-V support for your processor in order to run 64-bit Guests.

If your processor supports it, it can usually be enabled through the BIOS. If you can't find the option there, chances are it may not be available.
