HP DL380 G4 – Cannot install Server 2008 R2 64bit – not compatible

I recently purchased some software which will only run on the 64bit version of Windows, so I need to do a clean install of the 64bit version of Server 2008. When I ran the Intel Process Utility it told me that my processor was 64bit capable, but when I boot in WinPE (no DVD drive you see) and run the R2 installer I get this error:

This version of setup.exe is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running.

Do I have to enable 64bit mode? If so, how?

This is the offical installer for Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit I'm using from the Microsoft website.

WinPE is 32bit (by standard). If you download WAIK you can make a 64bit boot image, I remember seeing something packaged with TFTPBoot that may have been 64 bit, google it. :-)

Thanks for the suggestions, redblacktree, but the XML file was in fact well formed, and it was working fine off a USB key.

I found out I could use /unattend with setup.exe, so I copied the entire Windows install DVD to a file server, booted the same WinPE image via PXE, then ran:

net use w: \\server\share
w:
cd x64
setup.exe /unattend:w:\unattend.xml

And it worked fine!

The other gotcha is that I had to run

wpeutil InitializeNetwork

before I could see the network.

There's this pre reqs:

SQL Server Setup support files. You can install these files by running SqlSupport.msi located on your SQL Server 2008 R2 installation media.

I Located that file On:

D:\1033_ENU_LP\x64\Setup\sql2008support\sqlsupport.msi

That installed the setup on the machine. Then I ran the setup from the All Programs Menu and after that pointed the disk when asked.

I Noticed that after installing SQL the Setup begins to work normally. This must have happened by some weird pre-req, that the setup must have installed for me.
