Momentary press and long press of power button does nothing.
Can get in through iLO but pressing the button there does nothing.
This started after our block had a power failure but all our servers are surge protected and no other server had this issue.
Is it a power supply problem? Any ideas?
Well, this is an older ProLiant DL385 G2 server... 2006/2007 or so...
I'd suspect system board. Due to the age of the system and the fact that it's probably not under contract or support, you'll probably need to go the used parts route to outfit this system. Another thing to try is the motherboard battery. When the system powers off then boots all the way, is the time correct?
Have you run a diagnostic CD/DVD?
You should reference the HP ProLiant DL385 Generation 2 Server Maintenance and Service Guide for parts information if you choose to self-support.
If you intend to troubleshoot this unit, follow the diagnostic flowchart outlined in the HP ProLiant Servers Troubleshooting Guide.
Personally, I would not spend much time troubleshooting a server this far out of production. If you just need something that works quickly and intend to keep this system alive for awhile, buy another DL385 G2 system on eBay. They're under $200US. This ensures that you'll have some parts available for cannibalizing and is a quick fix. Long-term, prepare to move to a more current platform.
I do have two DL385 G2's still in production, though.
Two things...
You can add a warranty to an HP server whose factory warranty lapsed. It's not very expensive to add another year of support to the machine you have now.
You can also initiate a per-incident support call/technician with HP and be liable for parts charges.
Depends on how desperate you are...
But here's a (lengthy) troubleshooting procedure to try first if you have access to the machine.
- Remove the power supply units and swap them.
Test to see if the system will boot...
If that doesn't work:
- Remove all power supplies from the chassis
- Locate the System Maintenance Switch on the motherboard - It's a set of 10 DIP switches.
- Turn switch #6 switch on.
- Insert all power supply units.
- Power on the server and allow it to idle for 3 minutes.
- Power the server off.
- Remove all power supplies.
- Return DIP switch #6 to off (original) position.
- Reinsert the power supplies.
- Power the server on.
Test to see if the system will boot...
If that doesn't work:
- Remove all power supplies from the chassis
- Turn DIP switches #1, 5 and 6 switch on.
- Insert all power supply units.
- Power on the server and allow it to idle for 3 minutes.
- Power the server off.
- Remove all power supplies.
- Return DIP switches #1, 5 and 6 to off (original) position.
- Reinsert the power supplies.
- Power the server on.
Test to see if the system will boot...

You likely have a fried (something) on your motherboard. You'll need to call HP to get support or maybe even warranty replacement. Hopefully they have some diagnostic process that can help, but this is very doubtful.
Does your motherboard have replaceable voltage regulators near the processor or power supply input? One of these going bad could cause the symptoms you describe, as well.
Surge protection alone isn't enough, especially with servers. Good battery-based line conditioning is almost necessary with modern servers.
