Httpd -t not working on Ubuntu for Apache

When I navigate to /opt/apache-tomcat-7.0.11/bin which is my Apache install directory and I try to do something like this:

httpd -t

I get this kind of an error:

No command 'httpd' found, did you mean:
 Command 'dhttpd' from package 'dhttpd' (universe)
 Command 'xttpd' from package 'xtide' (universe)
 Command 'thttpd' from package 'thttpd' (universe)

Any idea why that would happen? The suggestions of the 3 commands do not work either 🙂

Try using the command

apache2ctl

If there is a httpd bin file in that directory then you need to put a . in front of the command

./httpd -t

Update: Working Now

The solution was mostly to Read The Freaking Manual, with the caveat that part of my problem was downloading the wrong package, and "the manual" in this case was install.txt, which is included in the PHP package. So there was some trial and error.

Here's what I did to get this working:

Go to http://windows.php.net/download/ and get the zip file listed under "VC6 x86 Thread Safe."

The rest of the steps were in install.txt. Here's the condensed version:

Extract everything to C:\php
Make sure C:\php is in the Windows system path, and reboot if you added it
- (In Windows XP: right-click My Computer, choose Advanced tab, click "Environment Variables," scroll down to Path in lower box, choose Edit, and append "C:\php;" to the variable value.)
Copy either php.ini-production or php-ini.development to simply c:\php.ini
In httpd.conf, change DocumentRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs" to point to the folder where you want to put your html/php files. Do use forward slashes for the path.

Also edit http.conf to add these lines:

 #How to process PHP code
 LoadModule php5_module "c:/php/php5apache2_2.dll"
 #Files that end in .php should be processed as PHP code
 AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
 #Where the php.ini file is located
 PHPIniDir "C:\php"

From there, PHP worked for me. You may also want to edit php.ini to tweak settings.

Permission denied: could not create /var/run/httpd.pid in Apache

I just figure out what issue. This is our environment:

RedHat 5 with latest apache RPM

When you look at the error logs it complains about not been able to create the httpd.pid, under the "run" dir. It didn't make sense because that directory had the correct context for read/write "httpd_sys_rw_content_t" (which I had to find from "/etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/customizable_types".

I realized (after hours of searching) that on the error log it doesn't give you the full path, but when apache stars it chroot dir to "/home/httpdjail".

Under this folder I found another "run" dir. After changing the permissions to:

chcon -Rv -t httpd_sys_content_rw_t /home/httpdjail/

IT WORKED!! ^^

I'm guessing if you give the right permissions to your "/chroot/httpd" it will fix your issue.
