Install p5i package on opensolaris 5.11 snv_110

I inherited an opensolaris server and we need to install a nice new network card (pci id 8086,10fb). The ixgbe package recently added support for this card; so I wanted to upgrade to the following.

Problem: How do install these packages?

The server is headless. I can forward an X display, but what program to start? The "install" link doesn't invoke any package manager when I run firefox on the server…

I think you could run

$ pfexec pkg install SUNWixgbe

Running with display, you should click on the p5i link from your browser to install it. This feature was made out in OpenSolaris 2009.06, which is snv_111. It may not be supported on snv_110, so you need to upgrade to the latest:

$ pfexec pkg image-update

This will create a new boot environment (most likely it'll be 'opensolaris-1' in the GRUB). You will be able to roll back any changes if required just by booting into your old installation.

Live Upgrade, which uses ZFS, creates writable snapshots of the operating system boot environment. With Live Upgrade, you can apply patches to a snapshot boot environment, then make that snapshot bootable. Upon the next reboot you get a patched OS environment. If you discover an issue with a patch, you can make the old snapshot bootable, reboot and you've backed out your changes. Its a pretty impressive solution to patching.

ZFS for the boot environment requires Solaris 10u6 or newer.

Also, Solaris Zones are pretty useful for application isolation. Obviously DTrace is very nice but RedHat is playing catchup with System Tap.

The package manager under OpenSolaris 5.11

I don't have an OpenSolaris 'server' to hand but the desktop I have handy has packagemanager (gui) and pkg (command line) installed. If you have access to packagemanager then you can add the webstack repository

gksu /usr/bin/packagemanager

    File->Manage Repositories
        Name: Webstack
        URL:  http://pkg.opensolaris.org/webstack
    Add

This should allow you to select the Webstack repository which contains Django.

If you don't have access to a GUI then you can install Django from the command line using pkg

pfexec pkg set-authority -O http://pkg.opensolaris.org/webstack webstack
pfexec pkg refresh 
pfexec pkg install Django

Note in place of pfexec if you have it setup you can use sudo or you can su to root and run the commands directly.
