i bought the hp proliant ml310e G8 with 8GB of crucial RAM. but when i plug it in the system initialization hangs on 90%. i read in another post (HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8 early system initialization hangs on 90%) that you cant install non-hp memory. but is there really no way to this? isnt it possible to skip the initialization?

You currently have UDIMM unbuffered RAM.
Your server can accommodate two CPUs. There are TWELVE DIMM slots, but only SIX of them are available if you have one CPU. Since your existing RAM is in two adjacent slots, you probably have a single CPU installed. You can use the six slots associated with that CPU for RAM.

The Memory Configuration Tool linked above will give you the specifics and part numbers needed to make this happen. Ideally, you'll want to use all registered RAM (fewer constraints). Look for HP part #500658-B21 for 4GB DIMMS.
HP does not manufacture hard drives. There are no "shorter than aftermarkets" drives. But HP use 2 form factors - LFF ("large" AKA 3.5") and SFF ("small" AKA 2.5"). So if the hot-swap cage in your server is SFF - you will not be able to use the WD5000AAKX (which are 3.5").
If you don't care about hot-swap - the least expensive option would be to remove the optical drive and install something like this into the 5.25" bays.

You have non-ECC non-buffered memory. This server is designed for ECC Non-buffered memory (UDIMM = Unbuffered DIMM).
So in short - you have wrong memory type. You need ECC UDIMM. Cruical is confirmed to work according to their web site.
