KVM Virtualization on AMD64 running Ubuntu 9.04

I want to setup KVM virtualization on my laptop Dell Inspiron 1526 (AMD64 Turion, 2GB RAM)
running Ubuntu 9.04 desktop, kernel 2.6.28 and KVM-84 (the latest official versions supported by Ubuntu)

I can successfully create an image file using:
kvm-img create -f qcow2 10GB

but when I'm trying to start a virtual machine:
kvm -hda PathToImageFile -cdrom PathToIsoImage -boot d -m 512
the host os restarts when the guest os starts loading.

I've checked the logs, there are no useful messages, only something like kvm module loaded, and enabling/disabling virtualization on CPUx

Can anyone help me with this issue?

It sounds like there is a bug in enabling virtualization on the processor. This question shows you how to verify your CPU has AMD-V support.

Otherwise, as the commenter said, it could be a kernel issue, or even Ubuntu issue.

Even if you don't think the messages are "useful" it may help to post the exact messages.

LapTop006 is correct. Both of your VMs have the same MAC address causing your DHCP server to assign the same IP address to both VMs.

When you start each virtual machine, you will need to add the command line option

-net nic,macaddr=aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff

so that each VM receives a unique MAC address. Substitute aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff for any valid MAC address that's not being used in your network. I just use 00:00:00:00:00:01 for the first VM, 00:00:00:00:00:02 for the second VM and so on.

I ended up creating a separate shell script to start each VM. For example, to start my OpenSolaris VM I use ...

there is no need for anything specific. if you have a bridge device, which is supposed to replace the eth config, then the virtual NICs of the VMs are attached to that bridge, much like you would attach VMs to a v-switch on VMWare ESX.

after that it's just simple networking to ssh into the VM - sshd must be running and port 22 must be accessible.

I'm njo expert on Ubuntu, but it does work on my Fedora box and on my RHEL systems.
